The Epitome of Foodie Magazines, Gourmet, to Close

October 6, 2009

The New York Times reports that Condé Nast announced it would shut down Gourmet and three other magazines: the parenting magazine Cookie and the wedding publications Elegant Bride and Modern Bride.

More casualties of the demise of print, but also as sign that the overt affluence of the lifestyle that Gourmet projected has fallen out of favor during these economic times. According to The Times, Gourmet was a money-loser and was outsold at the newsstands by Condé Nast‘s Bon Appétit magazine. With a history for keeping alive unprofitable products, this time it appears Condé Nast is not counting on a recovery for the ailing print industry.

We will miss the beautifully photographed food spreads, the exotic travel, and the “finer things” that gave Gourmet its style and character. So long Gourmet, you will be missed.

  3. The internet is taking over, and magazines need to work on getting on the net and monitizing it with advertisers. Just look at how google does it. Give people free search and then allow people to advertise and make BILLIONS. The same would be true for print publications.
